PSE Oil & Gas key technical personnel
Apostolos Giovanoglou PhD, Technical Director
Apostolos is responsible for the development of PSE’s gFLARE advanced depressurisation technology and for the delivery of related services. He is a Chemical Engineer with a PhD in thermodynamics and phase equilibrium from Imperial College London.
Apostolos has 14 years of experience in advanced process modelling projects including dynamic modelling of relief and blowdown systems; well start-up with a gas cap; KO drum low temperature analysis; simulation of HIPPS systems, and whole-plant simulation and optimization studies.
Publications, among many others, include several on fluid phase stability and equilibrium calculations published in Fluid Phase Equilibria, and related presentations at the PPEPPD 2004 and Thermodynamics 2005 conferences.
Praveen Lawrence, Oil & Gas Consulting Manager EMEA
As Principal Business Consultant Praveen manages the PSE Oil & Gas EMEA consulting team and is responsible for its delivery of services. He plays a major part in the development of PSE’s technology for dynamic flare network analysis, built on the gFLARE platform. Praveen is a Chemical Engineer with a PhD from University of Dortmund, Germany.
Praveen has extensive experience in the application of advanced process modelling of flare network and process blowdown applications, flow assurance of multiphase subsea flow lines and optimization of methanol injection.
Prior to joining the Oil & Gas division, Praveen was a Senior Consultant at PSE’s General Consulting division where he worked on a variety of petrochemical and polymerisation projects.
Simon Leyland, Oil & Gas Consulting Manager Americas
As Principal Business Consultant Simon manages the PSE Oil & Gas Americas consulting team and is responsible for its delivery of services. He plays a major part in the development of PSE’s technology for dynamic flare network analysis and its deployment to end users, built on the gFLARE platform. He is a Chemical Engineer with a MEng from Imperial College London.
Simon has 12 years of experience in the application of advanced process modelling in a wide range of fields including relief and blowdown systems; fuel cell systems; separation processes and paper making drying operations.
Prior to joining the Oil & Gas division, Simon was a Regional Head at PSE’s General Consulting division where he helped to establish and grow a number of key accounts in both software and services. In particular, Simon has been at the forefront of deploying advanced process modelling tools to non-expert users via web based interfaces.
Paul Frey, CEng, Principal Consultant Engineer
As the lead of PSE’s Pressure Relief, Flare & Blowdown Centre of Expertise, Paul works with Oil & Gas companies to eliminate risks and generate CAPEX savings through application of advanced process safety analysis.
Paul has extensive experience in the oil & gas industry, most recently at AMEC Foster Wheeler where he was the Principal Consultant and technical authority in pressure relief and blowdown for Upstream, Midstream and Downstream safety. His role included activities such as technical support and auditing of projects, flare and relief verification audits and responsibility for development of relief sizing methodologies and company standards. He was also a contributor to the API 520 and 521 Pressure Relieving Standards Committee meetings.
Kevin Wade, Product Manager
Kevin is PSE’s lead for production systems modelling and in particular production optimization. He has a PhD in numerical methods from University of Greenwich (1987). Kevin has 28 years’ experience in software development, mathematical modelling for multiphase flow systems and production optimization. He was responsible for the initial development and subsequent commercialisation of the 1st commercially available gas lift optimization software. He has conducted and project managed a number of production optimization studies on behalf of oil & gas operators for the optimization of their fields. Publications include technical papers on production optimization, wax deposition and field planning published by the SPE and related presentations at international conferences.
Malcolm Woodman, Senior Advisor, Production Optimization
Dr Malcolm Woodman started consulting for PSE in 2016, after more than 25 years with BP. For the last 10 years at BP, Malcolm was Project Manager, Programme Manager and Technical Lead for the use of model-based optimization in BP Upstream. His key responsibility was the development of systems to allow the use of commercial production modelling packages for production optimization on the operating assets, not just by central modelling specialists. Malcolm is the author / co-author of many peer-reviewed journal papers and conference presentations, covering topics ranging from three phase distillation, use of thermodynamics packages in industry, use of the CAPE-OPEN interfaces and production optimization.
Costas Pantelides, Strategic Advisor
Professor Costas Pantelides FIChemE FREng is the Managing Director of PSE and also a part-time professor of chemical engineering at Imperial College London. He holds BSc (Eng) and PhD degrees from Imperial College and a Masters degree from MIT.
With 30 years’ experience in process modelling technology, he is one of the world’s foremost authorities in this area, having played a leading role in the design and development of the gPROMS® and SPEEDUP® software. He has been the winner of the 1998 Beilby Medal and Prize, awarded jointly by the UK Society of Chemical Industry, the Royal Society of Chemistry and the Institute of Materials for his contributions to process systems engineering, and of the 2007 Royal Academy of Engineering MacRobert Award, the UK’s most prestigious prize for engineering innovation.
Costas plays an active role in formulating PSE’s strategy for Oil & Gas. On the technical side, his main involvement is in the design of novel tools that integrate mathematical models, advanced computational techniques and sophisticated software architectures to address problems of relevance to this sector.
