Seminar – gSOLIDS

An integrated framework for model-based engineering of industrial solids processes

09:00 Registration
09:30 Start

SESSION 1 – The industrial perspective

Introduction and overview

Ben Weinstein, Procter & Gamble:
"The industrial perspective" – a summary of the challenges faced in the design and operation of large-scale industrial solids processes

SESSION 2 – gSOLIDS – an overview

  • Scope and overview
  • Underlying principles
  • Unit operations
  • Graphical flowsheeting environment
  • Future development plans

SESSION 3 – Application

Case study 1: Model validation for an agglomeration process.
Given data from multiple experiments, how to discriminate between different agglomeration kernels and fit a single kernel to the data.

Case study 2: New plant design – sizing recycles.
Analysing the impact of the performance of key unit operations on the recycle-product flow ratio and thus on the capital investment requirements for other parts of a solids processing facility.

Case study 3: New plant design - sizing of surge bins
Determining the optimal trade-off between low capital cost and reduced start-up times of the process and the robustness of the process with respect to downstream disturbances (e.g. blockages).

10:50–11:10 Refreshments

SESSION 4 – Hands-on session

Hands-on experience in building and executing a solids process flowsheet and simulating several cases

SESSION 5 – Wrap-up

  • Summary
  • Evaluation approaches
  • Comments and feedback (discussion)
12:30–13:30 Lunch (hands-on session may continue)
